In 2011, the Burren and Cliffs of Moher achieved Geopark status, and is now recognised among the top 100 Geoparks in the UK and Ireland. A “Geopark” is defined as a region with outstanding geology, culture and heritage where people are working together towards a sustainable future through tourism and education.

A Sustainable Future for Tourism in North Clare
As a ferry company, we are acutely aware of our responsibilities for safeguarding this delicate ecosystem. Our existing conservation policy is based on the Burren Geopark guidelines and our own strong company ethos. The directors of Doolin2Aran Ferries are from a local Doolin family whose business has been in fishing and seafood for several generations. PJ Garrihy fished for lobster and crab under the cliffs for over 30 years and with that experience comes a level of knowledge and respect for the sea that gives us a deeper insight on how to work within appropriate limits in this natural environment.
Burren Ecotourism Network
In 2015, we successfully applied the Geopark Code of Practice and became fully fledged members of the Burren Ecotourism Network. This is a group of tourism businesses in the Burren region which includes attractions, accommodation providers, dining options and activities.
European Destination of Excellence
In 2015,the Burren Food Trail was named as the Irish winner of “European Destination of Excellence – Tourism and Local Gastronomy” (EDEN). This prestigious award is for developing a tourism offering based on their local gastronomy that balances sustaining the local environment with the promotion of viable tourism.
